Stichting Tulong Cebu: Een tweede thuis achter de dozen

 

Wat begon als een klein initiatief om hulpgoederen in te zamelen voor weeskinderen en arme gezinnen in Cebu, is uitgegroeid tot méér dan een stichting.

 

Stichting Tulong Cebu is voor velen een reddingsboei geworden – niet alleen aan de andere kant van de wereld, maar ook hier in Nederland.

 

Elke week komen zo’n twaalf vrijwilligers samen in een eenvoudig ruimte, tussen stapels kleding, speelgoed, schoenen en schoolspullen. Ze helpen bij het inpakken, coderen en sorteren van de ingezamelde spullen. Maar het gaat allang niet meer alleen om dozen en dozen vol hulp. Het gaat om mensen.

 

Veel van deze vrijwilligers weten maar al te goed wat eenzaamheid betekent. Velen van hen zaten in een sociaal isolement, worstelden met het gevoel nergens écht bij te horen. De maatschappij leek ze vergeten. Maar binnen Stichting Tulong Cebu vonden ze een plek waar ze wél gezien worden.

 

Wat begon als incidentele hulp is binnen twee jaar uitgegroeid tot een hecht team, een kleine gemeenschap waar iedereen zichzelf mag zijn. Na het werk volgt steevast een kop koffie, een broodje, een pan soep. Er wordt gelachen, gedeeld, gekaart/af en toe biljartje. En gepraat. Veel gepraat. Soms serieus, soms luchtig. Maar altijd met aandacht voor elkaar.

 

“Ik kan niet meer zonder deze groep,” zegt één van de vrijwilligers. “Voor het eerst in jaren voel ik me weer nodig, voel ik me thuis.”

 

En dat thuisgevoel is wederzijds. Stichting Tulong Cebu biedt structuur, betekenis en verbinding. De wetenschap dat hun werk rechtstreeks bijdraagt aan een beter leven voor weeskinderen in Cebu, geeft het geheel extra kracht. Ze zijn niet alleen bezig voor zichzelf – ze maken samen het verschil, over grenzen heen.

 

Op dit moment telt de stichting wekelijks 12 actieve vrijwilligers, met in totaal een poule van zo’n 18 mensen. Iedere doos die ze dichtplakken, draagt niet alleen hulp naar de Filipijnen – maar ook een stukje genezing, hier, dichter bij huis.

 

En dat alles wordt mogelijk gemaakt door onze vrijwilligerscoördinator, die verantwoordelijk is voor de werving en training van vrijwilligers v Stichting Tulong Cebu.

Stichting Tulong Cebu: A second home behind the boxes

What started as a small initiative to collect aid supplies for orphans and poor families in Cebu has grown into more than just a foundation.

Stichting Tulong Cebu has become a lifeline for many – not only on the other side of the world but also here in the Netherlands.

Every week, about twelve volunteers come together in a simple space, surrounded by stacks of clothing, toys, shoes, and school supplies. They help pack, code, and sort the collected items. But it’s no longer just about boxes and boxes full of aid. It’s about people.

Many of these volunteers know all too well what loneliness means. Many of them were socially isolated, struggling with the feeling of not truly belonging anywhere. Society seemed to have forgotten them. But within Stichting Tulong Cebu, they found a place where they are truly seen.

What started as occasional help has, within two years, grown into a close-knit team, a small community where everyone is free to be themselves. After work, there’s always a cup of coffee, a sandwich, a pot of soup. There is laughter, sharing, card games, and occasionally a game of billiards. And talking. Lots of talking. Sometimes serious, sometimes lighthearted. But always with genuine attention to each other.

“I can’t do without this group anymore,” says one of the volunteers. “For the first time in years, I feel needed again, I feel at home.”

And that feeling of home is mutual. Stichting Tulong Cebu offers structure, meaning, and connection. The knowledge that their work directly contributes to a better life for orphans in Cebu gives the whole effort extra strength. They are not only working for themselves – they are making a difference together, across borders.

Currently, the foundation has 12 active volunteers weekly, with a total pool of about 18 people. Every box they seal carries not only aid to the Philippines – but also a piece of healing, here, closer to home.

And all of this is made possible by our volunteer coordinator, who is responsible for recruiting and training volunteers at Stichting Tulong Cebu.
